Measuring instruments…these are things people seldom regard as collectibles, simply because they are usually used as equipment for work.

While I do use some of these in my work, the measuring instruments that you see here began as objects of a collection – a collection of any instrument that measures and takes measurements – of anything and of a multitude of parameters in all kinds of situations. It’s not fun; it’s just a fascination for devices that extend, detect, display, flicker, beep and respond in many such ways with every change of the environment.

The Devon Buy Collection of Measuring Instruments is divided into two categories – Analogue and Digital. Analogue instruments are simply those that do not run on electricity or batteries, and needless to say, are without LCD screens. Some of these manual instruments have been used for many decades, and could still be the preferred choice of measurements today for their better accuracy over their digital electronic counterparts.

Digital instruments usually offer higher precision in their readouts (there’s a difference between accurate and precision in the last two sentences), and while some may have up to three decimal places in their readings, it is provided within certain tolerances, which is given as a percentage range of the results.

One thing digital instruments offer is convenience, and quick multiple measurements can be taken on the go. Some even allow these multiple measurements to be recorded in the device for later reference.

While analogue may be endearing in its execution, digital offers the much needed convenience in today’s quick-paced way of working.
